I'm not sure how to start this blog. I created it to share my experiences from Canada to Mumbai, India and back. My plan was to leave this September. But I'm not sure if I'll actually be going, I never was. I'm excited by the idea yet I constantly get cold feet at the thought as well. So I've spent a good year or so just 'thinking' about going, yes that's right, just thinking.
I want to go there for a change of scenery and to check out the journalism job market, apparently it's in much better shape there than it is here. I've been working as a freelance journalist for a few years, I've been trying to find fulltime work in the field, but it's nearly impossible. With so many news stations and papers shutting down right now, I may just have to choose a new career path for myself. But before I do that, I'd like to give it a shot in Mumbai.
An uncle came over today to talk me out of the idea. He said it'd be dangerous for a young woman to travel alone in that city. He also said no one will hire me since there are millions of fully-qualified locals already seeking work in their country. I gotta admit that did make me feel a little guilty, I don't want to be taking away local jobs. He also said my meagre budget will not be enough to last me a year in Mumbai, as it's just as expensive to live there as it is in NYC. Lovely. There's no better feeling than to have someone tell you your goal is unrealistic and unachievable.
My parents are all for the idea. They're already calling their contacts in remote villages to spread the word that I'll be arriving soon to meet some eligible bachelors. I'm 20-something and in their eyes, have already surpassed the appropriate age for marriage. That's a subject I best save for a later time...
